I didn’t set out to become a bookkeeper. My career began in retail management, where I spent years leading teams, solving problems on the fly, and hitting sales targets. It was fast-paced, demanding, and full of moving parts, but not exactly what I wanted long term.

Then, came the big news. I was informed that my role was eliminated during a company-wide restructuring. I had a choice: reapply for the revised position with lower pay, or step into the unknown. I chose the unknown (and took the severance check that came along with it.)

While regrouping, I started working part time with a small local business that gave me one-off side gigs. One of those projects was marketing and advertising for a leg of their business that had continued to remain underutilized. They wanted to drum up work for their mobile onsite pressure washing segment of the business, and I managed to deliver a fully-packed summer schedule inside of a month. All on a campaign with a cost of just under $120. 

The owner was impressed. So impressed, in fact, that he offered to send me to school for accounting if I’d agree to handle his books in return. It was a risk on both our parts, but the kind that paid off – quite literally! Within two years, his profits grew and his revenue doubled, leading to his first million in sales. And I found a calling I didn’t know I’d been looking for.

Over those two years, we rewrote the business from the inside out. We scaled back services that drained more money than they made and doubled down on the ones that financially delivered, bringing in significant returns on investment.

We improved employee retention by introducing programs that boosted morale and accountability, which in turn elevated the customer experience and reinforced the company’s bottom line.

We also instituted safety practices that lowered the company’s workers’ compensation mod rating, leading to major savings on insurance premiums. On top of that, we optimized vendor relationships to secure better pricing on essential materials.

The list goes on, but the throughline was clear: when your financials tell the real story, you can start making decisions that actually move the needle.
