THE STORY OF Our Financial Services

Budding Business Bookkeeping

After years spent in sales roles, eventually climbing my way into management positions for Small Business and Big Box Retail, becoming a bookkeeper had never made an appearance on the list of things I thought I would ever become. So, how did I get here?

Working at a nationally recognized storefront in a management position, I received news that a reorganization was underway, and my position was to be discontinued corporate-wide. It was time to decide if I wanted to apply for a new role within the company or cut my losses and move along. Needless to say, I took the severance package and some time to myself to think of what to do next.

While regrouping, I started working part time with a small local business that gave me one-off side gigs – one of which was marketing and advertising for a leg of their business that had been underutilized. They wanted to drum up some business for their onsite pressure washing segment, and I managed to deliver a fully-packed summer schedule inside of a month. All on a campaign with a cost of just under $120.

The owner was thrilled with the results and wanted to find a mutually beneficial way to keep me involved with his company. He approached me with an offer to send me to school for accounting and in return, I would work in his business taking care of the books. It was a risk on his end and a significant pay cut on mine, but it worked out to be an excellent investment on both our parts. His profit margin increased, and his business’s annual revenue doubled within two years. Meanwhile, I was earning a salary that eclipsed what I was making in my previous management roles and discovered a passion I would never have found had it not been for him.

Over the course of those two years, we worked together to pare back the services that were costing his business more than he was earning from them. We drastically improved employee retention by introducing programs that boosted employee morale and accountability, which only reinforced the company’s bottom line. We instituted safety practices that directly contributed to reducing his workers’ compensation mod rating, saving him a significant amount of money on his premiums. We optimized vendor relationships to get the best pricing possible for his materials – the list goes on.

How did we do that?
